By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for dawn Richard Matheson. I Am Legend 1 of 5. I Am Legend 2 of 5. Throughout that same night, Will and Jim meet up with townsfolk who also sense something in the air; the barber says that the air smells of cotton candy. Among the townspeople is Will's year-old father, Charles Halloway who works in the local library, and who broods philosophically about his position in life, including on how he misses being young like his son.

It's a poetic, mythic vision of Mars, as Percival Lowell might have imagined it to be when he saw shadows through his telescope and thought they were canals. And it's a series of vignettes about real people who react in very familiar ways in a strange place.
Each story in the two volumes has been selected by the author from his massive output of SF stories over the years and each has a prefact specially written for this collection by Dr.
